Junior Mujica – Theatre Facilitator & Director with Creative Futures

Junior Mujica is a passionate theatre practitioner whose collaboration with Creative Futures in Monmouthshire made a lasting impact on youth theatre in the region. With a background in acting and a Master’s in Education, Junior brought a unique blend of performance skills and educational insight to his work.

As a facilitator with Creative Futures, Junior led expressive arts workshops for young people aged 11–19, encouraging them to explore their experiences and concerns through theatre. His approach fostered a safe and creative environment where participants could develop confidence, storytelling abilities, and collaborative skills.

One of his most significant projects was co-directing the original play The Visitors alongside Lisa Zahra. Devised over several months, the production drew on the real-life thoughts and emotions of young people growing up in a rural town. The play explored themes of isolation, identity, and belonging, and was performed at The Borough Theatre in Abergavenny to enthusiastic audiences, receiving praise from the local arts community.

Junior also co-directed a production for the National Theatre Connections programme with Lisa Zahra. Together, they guided a group of young performers through the staging of a newly commissioned play written specifically for youth theatre. The performance was a major success—well-received by the community and applauded for its strong ensemble work and emotional impact.

In addition to these major projects, Junior played a key role in the Creative Futures Summer School at The Borough Theatre, delivering workshops in improvisation, physical theatre, devising, and stagecraft. These sessions culminated in original performances that showcased the talent and creativity of local young people.

This period of collaboration with Creative Futures was not only pivotal for the young people involved but also for Junior’s own artistic journey. With the strong support of Creative Futures’ leader, Katherine McDermid Smith, Junior was encouraged to develop his own initiative—Improv Stars Academy. Katherine’s belief in his vision and her continued support were instrumental in bringing the academy to life. Their ongoing collaboration has remained a valuable partnership, helping to sustain and expand creative opportunities for young performers in the region.
